A transition to a future low-carbon electricity system will require much more transmission to connect new solar and wind generation to markets. That future can only be achieved efficiently and cost-effectively with more coordinated advanced planning and greater involvement from states, including energy policy agencies of state government that develop and implement state clean energy policies.

Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) is drawing criticism from renewable developers by bringing forward a proposal from Xcel Energy in Minnesota. The distribution factor (DFAX) proposal would lead to higher network upgrade costs for renewable developers with no certainty for firm transmission access.

The grid of the future will be one in part powered by solar, storage and vehicle batteries at the edge of the grid — be that behind the meter or in front of the meter on distribution lines. But how to interconnect those distributed energy resources (DER) quickly, safely, and reliably has been the bugaboo of utilities all over the world. No one wants a connected device to cause a disturbance in the grid and therefor interconnection today requires fairly lengthy studies.   

EDF Renewables North America said that all four units of the Palen Solar site in Riverside County, California, have entered service. The site includes 620 MWdc of solar PV plus 200 MWh of battery energy storage.

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the third solicitation, for hydro and wind assets, under the Competitive Tier 2 large-scale renewable energy procurement program, which is designed to retain existing renewable energy resources.

Duke Energy announced the completion of two battery storage projects in Florida totaling 17.2 MWh of combined energy capacity.

The recently completed Micanopy battery site in Alachua County is 8.25 MW/11.7 MWh and is located 15 miles southwest of Gainesville. The site provides a cost-effective solution for focused power quality and reliability for the town of Micanopy and nearby neighbors.

Module Level Power Electronics (MLPE) supplier Tigo Energy said it launched two 25 Amp products to support high-power and high-current bifacial solar modules. 

The Tigo TS4-A-F 25A and Tigo TS4-A-2F 25A rapid shutdown devices are intended to provide first-responder safety functionality for solar modules rated up to 700W, including bifacial modules. 

Tigo said both products are compatible with its RSS transmitters and pair with a variety of third-party solar inverters.
