Energy Update
The U.S. House Appropriations Committee yesterday approved an energy and water funding bill that, as compared to fiscal year 2018, cuts energy efficiency and renewable energy programs by $243 million, and increases research and development funding for fossil fuels by $58 million.

The plant, known as the Sierra BioFuels Plant (Sierra) is considered to be the country’s first commercial-scale plant that can convert municipal solid waste feedstock, household garbage into a low-carbon, renewable transportation fuel product.
Located in the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center, about 20 miles east of Reno, Sierra plant will use Fulcrum’s thermochemical process to convert household garbage into low-carbon transportation fuels.
Vivint yesterday said it plans to offer LG Chem RESU batteries to its solar customers across the U.S. this year. The company launched the energy storage offering this week for its customers in California.
Claimed to be the largest of its kind to be deployed for industrial application in Australia, the ultra high power lithium-ion battery is designed to provide output required for spinning reserve, ancillary services, mining, off-shore drilling and other utility and industrial applications.
Both firms will explore routes to upgrade and commercialize the non-prime product generated at Borouge, which is a joint venture of ADNOC and Austria-based Borealis.
The process, which is named as compounding, will be carried at the proposed facility, located in the Ruwais Industrial Complex.
In addition, both firms will explore chances to work together for strengthening Ravago’s expertise in multiple areas to further unlock value within the petrochemical chain.
The connection agreement was also signed by the Australian Energy Market Operator.
It includes the terms and conditions for the wind farm to connect to Victoria’s transmission network.
As per the agreement, AusNet Services will build, own and operate a new 70km transmission line.
The transmission line will run south of the Stockyard Hill Wind Farm to a new 500 kilovolt (kV) terminal station and network interface.
The Toronto-based miner said that the production ramp up of Cerro Moro remains on track as planned.
Commercial production from the mine is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2018.
According to the company, the Cerro Moro mine is a high-grade gold and silver operation sourcing ore from a combination of underground and open pit mining.
The firm said that the approval from state regulator is an endorsement of another element of its plan to upgrade its power plants fleet.
Entergy will now purchase the natural gas-fired peaking unit upon completion of construction by a subsidiary of Calpine.
Planned to be constructed west of Bogalusa on the site of a generation project Calpine which was put on permanent hold in 2006, the Washington Parish Energy Center will be purchased for approximately $261m.
This follows the 4 May 2018 announcement that Western Australia Lithium (WAL), its 50:50 joint venture with Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile (SQM), had entered into an exclusive option to lease a premier site in the Kwinana Strategic Industrial Area in Western Australia.
