Energy Update
(Tue, 03 Jul 2018) Fossil fuelsâpetroleum, natural gas, and coalâhave accounted for at least 80% of energy consumption in the United States for well over a century. The fossil fuel share of total U.S. energy consumption in 2017 was the lowest share since 1902, at a little more than 80%, as U.S. fossil fuel consumption decreased for the third consecutive year.
LG Electronics announced plans for a new solar module assembly plant in Huntsville, Ala. The new factory will create about 160 new full-time jobs, increasing LG's Huntsville employment by 60 percent to more than 400 workers.

As usual hot weather descended on New England in late June/early July but Vermont utility Green Mountain Power (GMP) was undaunted by peak demand. That’s because the utility turned to stored energy to reduce demand on the grid. There is a network of Tesla Powerwall batteries in Vermonters’ homes, stored solar power from GMP’s Stafford Hill Solar Facility in Rutland, and GMP’s new battery storage project in Panton. All combined that’s enough to power about 5,000 homes during the peak.
