PosiGen, which targets renewable energy and efficiency for low-to-moderate income (LMI) households, closed a $100 million preferred equity financing deal with Magnetar Capital’s Energy & Infrastructure group as the lead investor.

Appalachian Power said it wants to acquire or contract for 294 MW of solar and 204 MW of wind power over the next three years as part of its plan to meet targets set in 2020 by the Virginia Clean Economy Act (VCEA).

The law requires the utility to file an annual plan with the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) outlining how it will meet key mandates to achieve 100% carbon-free status by 2050.

GAF Energy announced the release of a solar roof system incorporating nailable shingles.

The new product is called Timberline Solar. GAF said shingles are installed like a traditional roof “with only a nail gun required.”

The company says Timberline combines solar technology with traditional roofing processes, allowing for faster installation.

Solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources (including biomass, geothermal, and hydropower) added more than 2,250 MW of new generating capacity each month during 2021.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) announced a new effort to study the effects of high wind loads on concentrating solar power (CSP) plant technology.

Carbon dioxide emissions in 2020 were the lowest in nearly 40 years, according to a 2021 year-end report by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

U.S. energy-related CO2 emissions totaled 4.6 billion metric tons, down 11% from 2019. That represented the nation’s lowest total since 1983. EIA cited lower energy demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as continuing changes in the electricity generation fuel mix.

As the top energy regulator, FERC had a busy year in 2021. FERC was actively involved in the investigation into the Texas winter event, and the joint report with NERC did not find fault with renewables. FERC has opened several lines of inquiry into building the future grid. But FERC needs to do more in 2022.

2021 was another year of severe weather and power outages. No region of the country was immune.

Colorado-based Scout Clean Energy acquired the 369 MW, $400 million Blue Sky Solar project from its original developer, RES (Renewable Energy Systems).

EPRI Staff

The past 12 months have been positively electric for the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). From working with the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a national EV charging infrastructure blueprint to speaking at COP26 about numerous EPRI-led decarbonization research initiatives, it has been a whirlwind of a year.

Let’s hop in our electric-powered DeLorean and take a trip back to revisit 2021.

Among EPRI’s highlights for the year:
