Energy Update

(Wed, 28 Sep 2022) Iraq holds some of the world’s largest oil reserves and is the second-largest producer in OPEC after Saudi Arabia. Although its crude oil production rose in 2021 and the first half of 2022, Iraq’s export infrastructure is constrained and midstream projects are often delayed because of insufficient investment and bureaucratic hurdles.

Following energy and power news in Texas can be dizzying.

In February 2021, widespread outages left hundreds dead, caused more than $100 billion in property damage, and inflicted untold psychological trauma on Texans. As a result, interest in “the grid” surged, even though the tragedy during Winter Storm Uri went far beyond the grid.

As the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season churns away and disrupts electric power systems, attention focuses on how effective solar-plus-energy-storage systems can be in reducing the impacts of extended outages.

Heather Zichal is stepping down from her role as CEO of the American Clean Power Association effective Oct. 20.

The trade group announced Wednesday that Zichal is leaving to become the new global head of sustainability at JPMorgan Chase.

An Australian state plans to invest more than A$157 million (US$100 million) in energy storage projects to support its transition to renewable energy sources.

Victoria aims to reach 2.6 GW of energy storage capacity by 2030 and 6.3 GW by 2035— enough to power around half of the state's current homes at their peak energy usage.

Sen. Joe Manchin’s permitting bill may not solve the renewables industry problems. If we focus on expanding the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) mandate to site transmission lines required for renewable development, I am not convinced that this permitting bill would do much for the renewable industry, because there are structural problems at grid operators that are under FERC’s jurisdiction that this bill does not and cannot address.

The global energy crisis is boosting interest in low-emissions hydrogen and the pipeline of projects is expanding, but only a small share of projects are under construction around the world.

Electrolyzer manufacturing is set to grow strongly and pilot projects are popping up in new applications such as steel and transport. But, this is just a small part of the potential of the hydrogen landscape, highlighting the need for greater policy support, says a new IEA report.

Entergy received approval from the Louisiana Public Service Commission to add 475 MW of solar, nearly tripling the company’s total renewable generating capacity in the state.

Under newly approved contracts, the utility will receive power from four solar farms across the state, including:

Battery maker LG Energy Solution signed agreements to secure lithium and cobalt supplies from Snow Lake Resources Ltd., Electra Battery Materials Corp. and Avalon Advanced Materials Inc.

All three produce the resources in Canada and LG Energy Solution said the agreements align with its vision to reinforce its battery materials supply chain in North America.

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. signed a master supply agreement with FlexGen Power Systems to supply 10 GWh of energy storage equipment over a three-year period.

China-based CATL will supply FlexGen with EnerC, a containerized liquid-cooling battery system with an expected lifespan of 20 years. The product’s energy density can reach 259.7 kWh per square meter, which CATL said is almost a 200% increase over air-cooling systems.
