Two energy storage firms yesterday were recognized at the Innovate UK conference for their work in liquid air and copper/zinc technologies. In a keynote speech at the conference in Birmingham, England, Business Minister Claire Perry announced the winners of the first phase of an energy innovation competition looking into the feasibility of energy storage.

The Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) will release on Monday, Nov. 13, a draft comprehensive requirements document for distributed energy resource management systems (DERMS). The organization is soliciting immediate input and comments from electric utilities and vendors. Interested parties will have their first opportunity to meet in person and discuss the requirements document at DistribuTECH 2018. The meeting will occur on Jan. 22 at the Henry B.

As California pushes forward in its transition to clean energy, the state faces hard choices in its most futuristic initiative yet: offshore wind power. State and federal officials are engaged in an intensive planning process for the first auction of zones for development of giant wind farms in the Pacific.

There’s long been a Catch-22 about residential solar: despite staggering market demand, it’s been hard to make money doing it—until now. Sunrun Inc. said Wednesday that it’s cash-flow positive. And Blackstone Group LP-backed Vivint Solar Inc. expects to hit that mark next year.

Saudi Aramco signed eight agreements worth $4.5bn with oil and gas service contractors, mainly to enhance gas production.

Gulfsands Petroleum says that it will no longer pursue the Moulay Bouchta Petroleum Agreement in Morocco (Moulay Bouchta) and consequently to immediately initiate the winding down of the activities of the group in Morocco.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in late October said that it received bids on geothermal leases in Nevada for about $78,000 in an online auction. Geothermal developer Ormat Technologies won a 5,078-acre parcel in Esmerelda County, Nev., paying about $20,000.

A successful transition to a 21st Century Electricity System requires careful consideration of a range of issues that will ultimately redefine the regulatory framework and utility business model while creating new opportunities for third-party providers and customers to contribute to the operation of the electricity system.

It's encouraging to see U.K. policy makers getting to grips with tackling heat loss, which is one of the biggest sources of energy waste in our towns and cities. Heat network expansion is among 50 policies proposed by the U.K. government in its recently published Clean Growth Strategy. 

It’s been nearly two years since the release of the GridWise Alliance’s last Grid Modernization Index (GMI-3). The results of the just-released GMI-4, GridWise’s latest tracking of grid modernization efforts across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, demonstrates increased participation in and acceleration of grid modernization efforts across the nation – as clean energy, distributed resources, smart meters, and other technology adoption expands.
