The U.S. generates millions of tons of food scraps; inedible fats, oils and greases; sewage and manure. Some of this organic waste is used for energy or fertilizer, but most of it—around 50 million tons a year—is sent to landfills, incinerated, or otherwise left to decompose.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) last week said it is making up to $14.5 million in new funding available to advance geothermal energy development.

Every year at about this time we at the Global Wind Energy Council release our ‘Global Wind Report: Annual Market Update,’ updating our preliminary annual market statistics, surveying the global market, giving snapshots of the most important markets, delving into some key issues facing the wind sector and laying out our projections for the next five years.

(Fri, 27 Apr 2018) The United States exported nearly 1.4 billion gallons of fuel ethanol in 2017, surpassing the previous record of 1.2 billion gallons set in 2011. U.S. imports of ethanol in 2017 increased compared with 2016 but remained relatively small at 77 million gallons, resulting in the United States being a net exporter of ethanol for the eighth consecutive year.

Three wind farms in Texas with a combined installed capacity of 508 MW will undergo repowering this year to improve operational efficiencies and extend the projects’ lifespan.

In what could be the beginning of the new way forward to utilities, on Tuesday, Hawaiian Gov. David Ige signed the Ratepayer Protection Act, a new law that directs utilities in Hawaii to change their business models and fully decouple revenue and capital expenditures.

(Thu, 26 Apr 2018) Federal subsidies for renewable energy—including biofuels for transportation use and renewable generation of electricity—dropped to $6.7 billion in fiscal year (FY) 2016, a 56% decline from FY 2013. Renewable subsidies in FY 2010 and FY 2013 were approximately $15 billion, more than double FY 2016 levels, as support from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) lessened.
