Pumped storage hydro, utility-scale batteries return about 80% of the electricity they store

Pumped-storage hydroelectric facilities in the U.S. operated with an average monthly round-trip efficiency of 79%, and the utility-scale battery fleet operated at 82%, according to 2019 data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Appalachian Power seeks up to 300 MW of renewable generation capacity

Renewables now account for 24% of US’ total energy generation capacity

Renewable energy sources (i.e., biomass, geothermal, hydropower, solar, wind) strongly dominated new US energy generation capacity additions in 2020, according to the SUN DAY Campaign of data released by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

Combined, renewables accounted for 22,451MW, or more than three-quarters (78.09%) of the 28,751MW of new utility-scale capacity reported to have been added last year.

BASF to add 90 MW total of wind and solar power contracts in Texas

German chemical company, BASF, and EDF Energy North America signed a 35-MW wind power purchase agreement (PPA) that will bring 25 MW of wind power to BASF’s Verbund site in Freeport, Texas, and 10 MW of wind power to the Pasadena, Texas, site. The agreement adds to another recent PPA that will supply the Freeport site with 55 MW of power from EDF Renewables’ Space City Solar project.

Intel, PGE and Avangrid work together to advance new 138-MW Daybreak Solar facility

Portland General Electric today announced that Intel has joined PGE’s Green FutureSM Impact program. Intel’s participation enables PGE to enter into a 15- year agreement with Avangrid Renewables, a subsidiary of AVANGRID, Inc., to purchase the energy from a new 138-megawatt solar facility that will be developed in Wasco County, Oregon.
