(Mon, 27 Feb 2017) More than 27 gigawatts (GW) of electricity generating capacity was added to the U.S. power grid during 2016, the largest amount of added capacity since 2012. These additions more than offset the retirement of roughly 12 GW of capacity, resulting in a net capacity gain of nearly 15 GW, the largest change since 2011.

The topics covered include: fuels used and end uses; structural and geographic characteristics; space heating; lighting; appliances; electronics; air conditioning; water heating; and household demographics. EIA’s 2015 RECS Household Survey captured more than 200 energy-related items from more than 5,600 households.

The Biotechnology Innovation Organization in recent comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said it supports the inclusion of additional biofuel feedstocks and pathways under the federal Renewable Fuel Standard program. 

Preliminary work for the construction of the biomass power plant in Mansoa, central Guinea-Bissau, will begin in March, with the arrival of Chinese technicians, announced the Guinean representative of Chinese company Shenyang Lan Sa Trading Co Ltd, which is financing the project.

University of Iowa (UI) President Bruce Harreld said this week that the UI campus will be coal-free by 2025, and biomass will be at the heart of the transition to increased renewable energy use.

(Fri, 24 Feb 2017) U.S. crude oil imports from Saudi Arabia and Iraq, two of the United States’ main sources for imported crude oil, have risen since reaching relatively low points in 2014 and 2015. On a combined basis, crude oil imports from these countries are the highest since late 2012.

Andalas Energy and Power provided an update on its activities in Indonesia including the completion of a feasibility study for its first 60MW wellhead gas to power project in partnership with Pertamina, Indonesia’s national oil company (Project) in the Jambi province of Sumatra.
