Energy Update

Houston-based Sunnova Energy Corp. yesterday said that it is working to send energy storage systems to Puerto Rico as part of an effort to solve the immediate needs of Puerto Rican solar customers and to create a more resilient, long-term power service for the island’s energy infrastructure.

Today, companies are making big moves to power their operations with clean energy. To date, corporate buyers have purchased a global total of 19 GW of renewable energy, enough to power five million average American homes.

(Tue, 03 Oct 2017) In EIA’s latest update of state gasoline and diesel fuel taxes data, the simple average of taxes and fees on gasoline levied by the states and the District of Columbia in effect as of July 1, 2017 was 27.9 cents per gallon (¢/gal), up 4.5% from the same time last year.

DONG Energy on October 2, announced to shareholders that it was changing its name to Ørsted to better reflect the profound strategic transformation from black to green energy and the company’s recent divestment of the upstream oil and gas production.

How should you position your solar company in light of the Suniva/SolarWorld trade case? To address that question, I recently participated in a Renewable Energy World webcast with Abby Hopper, president of the Solar Energy Industries Association, and Matthew Nicely, a lawyer representing SEIA. For NEXTracker, our position is clear: We fully support SEIA’s efforts to convince the U.S.

Matthew Nicely’s answers to the questions that were asked during the webcast, "What Now? How You Should Be Positioning Your Business in Light of the ITC Ruling." Perhaps one of these is your question, too.

California, once considered a leader in community solar, has struggled to implement Senate Bill 43 (SB-43), which mandated the creation of the Green Tariff Shared Renewables (GTSR) Program. As envisioned by SB-43, the GTSR Program includes a Green Tariff (GT) component and an Enhanced Community Renewables (ECR) component. It provides an opportunity for the three California investor-owned utilities (IOUs) combined to procure up to 600 MW of new renewable energy.

A network of car charging stations is being developed in South Australia to allow Tesla drivers to visit the world’s biggest lithium-ion batterybeing built by Elon Musk in the state’s north.

For Caribbean islands plunged into darkness after hurricanes Irma and Maria, more resilient, small-scale electric systems powered by the sun are looking increasingly attractive. Transforming a grid, though, doesn’t come cheap.

When it comes to garbage, geography is destiny. Look at Texas and Florida, recovering from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Homeowners and businesses not incapacitated by the storm have begun the arduous and emotional work of separating destroyed possessions and materials by type and placing them curbside. Cities have begun the intimidating logistics of picking it up and transporting it to its final destination.
