ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Federal environmental and energy officials moved Wednesday to quell a growing controversy over whether work done by the offshore wind power industry is killing whales in the northeastern U.S., saying there is no evidence this is happening.

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union pushed forward on Tuesday with a major clean tech industrial plan which not only should keep the continent in the vanguard of plotting a greener future but also guarantee its economic survival as it faces challenges from China and the United States.

Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions said it acquired Pike Solar, a solar power plant being built to serve customers of Colorado Springs Utilities. DESS is an unregulated commercial brand of Charlotte-based Duke Energy.

DESS acquired the solar project from Germany-based JUWI Inc. JUWI will be responsible for the project’s engineering, procurement and construction. Solar modules will be procured by DESS.

Longroad Energy said it lined up financing and started work on Sun Streams 3, a 285 MWdc PV and 215 MWac / 860 MWh storage project in Maricopa County, Arizona.

Sun Streams 3 is expected to begin commercial operations in 2024, and has a long-term Power Purchase Agreement with Arizona Public Service.

Wisconsin utility Alliant Energy has energized three solar projects totaling 250 MWac.

The projects are part of Alliant Energy’s Clean Energy Blueprint. Burns & McDonnell performed the engineering, procurement, and construction work on the projects, and will now move on to six additional solar projects within Alliant Energy’s blueprint. The Wood County (150 MWac), Bear Creek (50 MWac), and North Rock (50 MWac) projects are now energized.

FlexGen Power Systems announced it would provide 420 MWh of battery storage to Middle River Power across four California sites.

The storage would be co-located with existing simple cycle natural gas peaking plants,

North Carolina-based FlexGen said the batteries would be used to store excess power from solar energy sources during the day and release it when it is most needed during the evening hours.

BRIGANTINE, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey’s governor said Jan. 13 he does not think undersea preparations for offshore wind farms should be halted in response to a recent spate of whale deaths in New Jersey and New York.
