Solar company Altus Power Inc. and module manufacturer Heliene Inc. signed a three-year agreement under which Altus Power will be able to buy up to 250 MW of solar modules from Heliene for use in solar generation projects across the U.S.
In connection with the supply agreement, Altus Power also plans to invest up to $5 million in Heliene as part of that company’s anticipated take-over transaction with Buzz Capital 2 Ltd. and listing on the TSX Venture Exchange.
A solar market analysis firm said that the 25 GW of utility scale capacity expected to be deployed in 2022 may end up closer to 15-20 GW as supply chain-related issues continue to challenge the industry.

TransAlta asked Alberta regulators for approval to build a 180 MW/360 MWh battery energy storage system on land that is part of the Ghost Hydro-electric facility near Cochrane, Alberta.
The utility said it plans a two-phase approach to construction with Phase 1 constructed, energized and tested by the end of 2023, prior to the construction of Phase 2. The project has an estimated cost of C$120 million ($95 million). The second phase could enter service in 2025.
The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission said January 20 that it would require Xcel Energy to implement new ways to review solar projects applying to connect to the grid while continuing to maintain reliability and safety standards.
As part of the Commission’s decision, Xcel will pilot group application reviews, roll out a customer cost sharing proposal for system upgrades, and report back to the Commission on its progress.
Consulting firm Wood Mackenzie released analysis saying California’s newly proposed net metering tariffs would cut the state’s residential solar market in half by 2024.
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) proposal, known as NEM 3.0, would reduce payments granted to rooftop solar customers for the excess power they generate, which is known as net metering.
California’s Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) is proposing to add nearly 1,600 MW/6,400 MWh of battery energy storage across nine projects in the state.
