THE HAGUE, June 24 (Reuters) - The Dutch government said on
Friday that it would lower the cap on production at the
Groningen gas field to 24 billion cubic metres a year for the
next five years.

decided to cut production at the giant Groningen gas field from
its current level of 27 billion cubic metres a year from October
1, 2016, Deputy Prime Minister Lodewijk Asscher said on Friday.
Much has been made of the use of natural gas as a bridge to a clean renewable energy economy. The primary argument in support of natural gas is the fact that it is cleaner than coal and can be conveniently and cost-effectively substituted for it in power generation.
